In the wild the ants house themselves in the hollow chambers of the plants swollen stem and they are further protected from predators due to the spines that grow on the stem. In turn the ants provide a defence for the plant as they will swarm to defend anything that tries to eat the plant.
Fear not though, you don’t need ants in your home to keep this plant happy, simply position this plant in medium light and keep it evenly watered but don’t ever allow it to sit in water.
